How religious are you?

Submitted by Sasmathu Location: All India (All India, India)

Some how homosexuality has always been seen as anti-religion. Even though we have references like shiva and vishnu giving birth to ayyapa and arjuna having bromance with krishna etc this had not been completely accepted by any religion (not only hinduism). That being said, how many of you here are practicing religion? Many times when a gay is found to be religious it is always seen as an attempt to hide his guilt/sin? Why should it be so? Cant somebody be religious and also be gay?

I am deeply spiritual rather than to say I am religious. Of course I am a staunch and devout practicing Roman Catholic Christian. But that's the person i am and has nothing to do with my orientation.

I had a secular upbringing and given my habit of extensive reading , as far as I know none of the religions actually condemns "homosexuality" explicitly. Of course the Hindu scriptures are even more patronising to this. The story of Aravaan in Mahabharata is one such example. But it's certain clerics almost from every religion interpret some vague texts somewhere in some other contexts and starts blaming homosexuality.

The current Pope Francis said "IF A MAN IS GAY AND IF HE SEEKS GOD AND WLLING, WHO AM I TO JUDGE HIM ?" So our individual seeking of God or spirituality has nothing to do with our orientation. End of the day it's our own KARMA which decides our character not our orientation.

Religion is just a regional interpretation. And every religion says God created humans. If so, God has created us the way we are born gay. Even homosexuality is in animals. Also fighting in the name of religion is person's poor understanding of his faith. None of the faith says condemning or killing a fellow human is the way to show your faith. It's love to fellow humans is the true way to God.

But on a personal note, as I mentioned before I am staunch Roman Catholic, I stopped confessing (Confession is one of the 7 sacraments in my faith) ever since I had a philandering gay *** life. I have decided to resume it only when I find a true single gay partner for myself. Well that's a personal belief though since somewhere I have a guilty conscience before God of this philandering nature of my gay life.

Thanks Sasmathu for bringing up the topic. As much as I loved your first half of description, I hate the second part of it. Religion is ingrained in us even before sexual maturity. I don't think anyone uses religion to hide their guilt. It would be foolish if one uses God or religion as a relief for guilt. If it's the other way, as like they feel weak or confused etc and seek salvation to God for strength, it's a different meaning altogether. I hope I have conveyed the meaning. I'll share my submission in a separate comment.

Once again thank you sasmsthu. I love this topic as I can write my heart out. I have been extremely pious and loved the God with every drop of my blood, every inch of my nerves and every living cells, tissues and organs. I don't have a single religion to follow, I accept Christianity and Islam the same way as Hinduism, however, I have too much love for Shiva and Vishnu, in particular Krishna than any other forms of Vishnu. I have a copy of Quran in English. But soon after two pages of reading it, I felt it was too strong and extremely influential. I felt I didn't have the maturity to continue to read it. I may buy a Bible soon. But I know a lot of story from the Bible better than most of my Christian friends. I celebrate Christmas each year and I have been in the Carol choir. So for me, religion is deeply ingrained soul level relationship with a force I can't see or fully understand.

Last few weekends I have travelled to thirunelveli, suchindram, guruvayur, sabari Mala, some thyyam festival at North Kerala. I am currently at Trivandrum and have made few visits to Padmanaba swamy Temple, there's one in adayar too and Aatukal bhagavathi Amman temple which is believed as our very own kannagi from silapathikaram. I'm planning my visits to madurai Meenakshi Amman temple in coming weeks and currently fasting for Iyappa for my second visit to sabari Mala by May. Need to go to kanyakumari as well before I relocate to Chennai completely. So guys don't be judgemental to ask what I'm doing here in ohmojo while I'm in fasting or abstaining. . I'm only reading the conversation and posts and not hooking up with anyone per se.

Like Valentine mentioned I am spiritual too and I believe there is a higher power that governs our lives. I also believe in Karma and what goes around comes back to you. Charity and Kindness helps your spiritual side. I like visiting temples and try to do at least once a week. In Chennai my fav temple is Mylapore and there are a few other nice temples too which I love to visit. I sponsor a old age home after my mother died in her memory.

@Guru - I have an English version of Quaran and also a Tamil version of Mahabharata retold in prose style. Back in my days as a school kid I read almost all 'AMAR CHITRA KATHA' of krishnaleela and many Hindu mythic stories. My drawing room in my flat has a "Bhaktha Meera" hand painted by me. Infact in my blog I have a poem comparing Meera's passion. Of course I have both gifted mostly the 'Radha Krishna' paintings to my straight friends too..

Being a native of Madurai I visit Meenakshi temple quite often. Last to last year Tamil new year I was visiting Meenakshi temple in main sanctum. But now with the Dharshan ticket and the line following that I somehow don't get the connect in Meenakshi temple as before since we could roam about freely, buying 'Prasadam' , sitting near the golden lotus pond after a tiring day of walking around the large temple. I have visited the Chidambaram temple, the unique feature of it being that one point you could get to see both Siva and Vishu sanctums at right angles. Have been to Nagoor dharga while our families usual trips to vailankanni.

For me it's about the peace you get in a place of worship matters most (Be it a mosque or temple or church). Thanks to the secular outlook my parents had about religion and my mom being my biggest influence I was raised this way. Tripathi and Amritsar are in my bucket list still.. Hope to visit those soon.

Hmm interesting topic. I have always been.attracted to philosophy, temples art n architecture right from young age. Used to spend time at grandparents home dreaming godly figures on the floor using chalk. Love visiting temples. Whenever time permits I write sriramajayam have roughly completed 1 lakh times. Listen to spiritual n philosophical discourses of velukuddi krishnan, chaganti and many more people about Ramayanam, Srimad bhagavatham, mahabaratham, ashtadasa puranas n many more. I have huge collection of books on Tantra, yantra n philosophy n puranas n rajaji mahabharatha n Ramayana. I do listen to discourses on Quran n bible while I was in Malaysia n UK.
Love to travel alone backpacking to temples all over India n Tamilnadu especially, while kumbakonam is my favourite destination as from there I can.visit many more temples around there. Temples always mesmerize me. In most of the temples I spend time with temple elephants n mahouts I don't know they attract me a lot. So I have lot of jumbo friends.

Quite interesting comments. Atlast I am not alone. Even though a hindu by birth, was quite impressed with biblical teaching due to my schooling in christian school till 12th. Some of my close friends are Christians and in general I feel they are more liberal when it comes to religion. I strongly believe in karma.

Religion is a cultural construct and something which is imbibed into you starting at a very early age. Growing up in a pretty orthodox yet open minded household and a school where secularism was instilled at a young age. Growing up in a city filled with temples and festivals all through the year and living at a stones throw from the ginormous temple I 'm pretty religious and spiritual. South Indian temples are centres of so much energy that nothing can beat their sanctity which I fail to find in a lot of places. Growing up I was exposed to a lot of books ranging from Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, to Kamasutra to Tantric *** and Bible and Quran, it pretty much gave me a broader outlook to life! Undergrad days would never be without a visit to a temple even if sick to death. Blame the temple Prasadam. My holiday tours would be to temples and I would really enjoy it. I backpacked to a lot of lesser known temples during my break year and temples are something I really miss here. I do strongly believe in karma and going to a temple energizes and is a great stress buster. I would literally confide everything in a temple and during desperate times I wouldn't mind shedding tears.

Roman Catholicism is something which has attracted me for quite some time rather than Evangelical Protestantism and I would not mind praying in a church every now and then. I used to attend masses in Latin and love the choir.

Religion can be a mask to cover your guilt only if you think what you do is guilty. Our society was much open to queer and homosexuality until the advent of the Western Colonization. You can still observe esoteric sculptures in a lot of temples, as it was looked as another aspect of life.

@neel - It does look that the original Indian culture was welcoming of all s e xual preferences. A visit to Khajuraho and some of the similar temples indicates the openness. From orgy to Man on Man/ Woman on Woman in various positions you can probably see them all. The 1000 years of Mughal invasion killed some of this openness but even the Mughals were known to have harems filled with men and women. In the movie Padmavati they clearly show Khilji in a emotional relationship with a man and physical relationship with a woman. It’s the British Colonial invasion that caused the final damage with 377. But we can’t blame them they have changed the laws and moved on. It’s India with its politicians and the vote bank politics that is holding on to this archaic law. All Religions teach Tolerance and Peace but the fundamentalist interpretation of the religion is causing all the stress. The sad part is with each passing decade our intolerance seems to be only getting worse. I sometimes think of a separate country for gay men and women where no one would judge them and it’s easy to just be yourself.

As most of you mentioned, religion is just a path to know your inner self and to be free. I like all the religions as it is and I have my close friends from various religions. I believe in karma and there is a positive energy as part of us that drives us which makes us not to harm our fellow beings. That I believe as God and I love Him.

@sashmatu very interesting topic indeed. I firmly believe religion and spirituality are two different things often confused as the same. Spirituality has no relation whatsoever with ones sexual orientation. In my opinion it is an inner process where you connect with your deeper self and rise beyond what you are. Religion on the other hand has set rules and boundaries and conditions and is closely associated with social structure. I believe the former is more superior.

Coming to my personal believes, I was a born a Hindu but was never raised religiously. I've grown an affinity towards mythology and love it for the strength of its characters. I feel a deeper connection with the characters in it. It has nothing to do with my sexuality. It enriches me as a person and makes be strong.

In the Ancient Indian culture homosexuality was never considered as a sin or something anti-religious, it was neither promoted nor condemned, but the society then was much more open to different sexualities. That is why we have many homo erotic stories in the ancient puranas; we also see homo erotic sculptures in certain south indian temples & also in the Sun temple & Khajuraho in North India.
Shiva himself in Ardhanareeshwara form is seen as half man & half woman. Only the advent of mughals & the britishers changed the scenario here, they thrust their values regarding the homosexuality here, as some of our members have already pointed out.
One ancient jain scripture states that, 20 % of monks of that period were gay men. Many alwars & nayanmars have imagined themselves as women & the god as their lover and sung hymns expressing their love for the God..their songs have a bisexual tinge & they were perfectly accepted by the masses.
Always a considerable proportion of monks, nuns & saints of different religions have been lgbt people. I do not want to quote the exact names of prominant Lgbt saints. Sublimation of *** and going beyond their sexuality is much more easier for gay men & women than for a straight person due to certain social reasons.
Even in Bible i ve come across homo erotic stories.

Coming to me, I have the religious books of 6 major world religions at my home..i ve read the core essence of most of them. I try to learn valuable points from all the faiths. I ve been practising certain heartulness & mindfulness techniques for more than 2 decades. I also often visit powerful energy spots in our country to recharge my inner energies. They do give us certain self mastery & also certain mastery over our circumstances.

But as few of them here pointed out, religion is different from spirituality.Religion is more associated with morals, orthodoxy & literal interpretation of scriptures; whereas spirituality is of a different quality. Even an atheist or an agnostic can be a spiritual person. Spirituality is a deep attunement with the entire existence, its creation & its inner laws. When men and society mature, they move more away from the religion, towards spirituality.

I am highly spiritual. Not because as an attempt to hide my sin.I brought up in that way to be spiritual.Once I able to analyse what is right and wrong.Myself is very much attached to it.

I go to church(I don't know the proper way to pray but I light candles and pray for sometime) and temples.I wish to visit mosque but I never get a chance to go inside.

There is some undefined matter which keeps us moving. It's my definition to God.We should have some little bit of fear over someone so that we will not indulge in anti social or any crime activities which is unethical to human creatures. That someone here implies the god.

I don't have any policies that not to go inside temple if I had non veg food.I will take bath and will visit.I never feel guilty.I believe that I am pure in my heart.(If I tell this to my Mom, she will scold me...Lol)

@exotic - kabaleeshwarar temple is one of the most favourite.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, whenever I feel over happy, sad, worry.I used to visit temples.

Like pilgrims, I used to travel to holy places.

* Sabarimala - 7 times (since from my fifth standard till 10 th standard... first time I walked from erumeli to sabarimala (periya patha).. wonderful experience)

* Sathuragiri (virudhunagar district) - The toughest path which I ever seen till now

* Tirupathi - By walk

* Tiruvannamalai - giri valam

* Few more temples occasionally or frequently

Future plans :

Jothirlinga, shiradi,Divya dhesham (108),Vatican city (I am not sure how far it is possible to visit all these but I wish to complete this before I leave this world 😊)

P.S : The persons I have gone through in this Gay life are highly spiritual for one reason or other(It's my personal statement based on people I met so far)

@Pandi 1980 That is quite a spiritual journey for your age.
Even I started doing poojas as a very early age may be at 8-9 yrs. The only thing i did was prepared a powder with roasted channa dal (pottukadalai) mixed it up with powdered sugar and milk and offered it as neivadiyam to the ever loving universal mother (bhuvaneshswari jaganmatha). Somehow Devi always attracted me. So started doing pooja on fridays. Even this attracted so my of scorning from my relatives since most of them where (kind of) liberals and thought doing friday pooja is a very effeminate thing (ethelam kalyanamanna poombalainga thane seivanga- kind of comments). Once when we visited our uncles place at T nagar, I was so insistent on visiting the nearby shiva vishnu temple after hearing the temple bells ringing. My uncle was so put off by my impatience that he asked my father to show me to a psychologist!!! But more the discouragement I got, the more I became religious. Till marriage devi was my only aradhana morrthy. But after marriage i started praying to other gods and now i realize god as no form, religion, gender or anything (nirguna brahmam). My devi pooja is more like a journey with my mother who loves me for what i am, who doesnt judge me and patiently teaches me good and bad. More importantly I dont have to fear about loosing her since she would be there for ever, even long after i am gone. Yes even this journey has its own ups and downs like any other relationship. Looking into interact with any like minded srividhya upasaka if any here.

40 years down the lane. I can discuss about the intricacies of trimatha adwaitha/visitaadwaitha/duvaitha, nuances of lalitha sahasranamam, basics of tantra etc.

Backing back to the topic, most people think gays use religion as a device to hide their sinful (!!!) orientation. Not true at all.

Many atleast among hindus things doing regular pujas is a very effeminate thing. On the other hand a women who is not religious is also judged in a similar way.

Just would like to share my view here ..
As far as my knowledge , in all religion same *** relationship is not entertained.
How ever in christianity , same *** relationship is treated as a severe sin..sorry for pointing out one alone..as i have seen this from my school days till now...I did study in Christian school .. there was an incident happened - two guys were in close and found by people and they were treated and punished very badly ..also most of English gay movies it portrait the same..eg. Latter days.. but in one scene the guy explained saying same *** relationship is not a sin and the statement quoted in Bible is not for same *** relationship .. how ever no religion can stop or control the "feelings between people"
Sorry if I did hurt you guys by specifying one religion here..I didnt mean particularly..just shared what I have been through so far

There was some study published long back.
It says very spiritual people are also very sexual.
Spirituality and sexuality go hand in hand since both seek to have a greater experience than usual.
Also it is said when kundalini gets activated and starts traveling from mooladhara (root plexus) to upwards, it enters swadhisthana chakra (sacral plexus) which controls sexual tendencies; so those who are into spiritual practices tend to get oversexual once swadhisthana chakra (sacral plexus) gets activated then once energy travels further up then sexual urges come down.
But most people get stuck with sexual pleasure. That's why we see many modern yogis getting caught in sexual scandals. Because these days it's easy to get indulged in *** than past.

Nice topic for discussion and good to know everyone is following one or another spiritual path no matter from which route you belongs too.

I personally feel that no relegion is above one or other and they all teach us to know ourselves first.

Someone nicely said caste or relegion belongs to HUMAN and spirituality belongs to SOUL.

BUT NOWADAYS WHATEVER IS HAPPENING AROUND US ITS PATHETIC EVEN EDUCATED PEOPLE ARE BEHAVING LIKE *** EVERYONE IS TRYING TO BE SUPERIOR FROM ONE OR ANOTHER IN TERMS OF CLASS CASTE RELIGION EVERYTHING YOU MEAN

I m hindu but I give equal respect for other religions too without getting carried away on social or electronic media nowadays even don't believe in caste system too

Very nice but sensative topic and nice discussion I seen above, Thanks to all of above to start a good topic and sensable discussion.

I thought to put my thought in Hindi but as my south brothers are here try to express myself in english.. If spelling mistakes please parden.

So first I introduce to myself in context of the topic, I am a very religious person and used to do so much Religious practice ( puja path tirth ) etc in erlier days, I also want to go to Ashram and reside there as Sevadar....but changed decision 8 years ago due to some personal.concern.... I am also Hardcore follower of right wing and strongly support them did work in organizations as well... and aware they not support same *** relation or marriages due to their own created religious/ social concern however I used to support them .....

Now I nighter so connected..and active for.. religious practice nor that hardcore organization... But yes turn toward the spirituality.. And wisdome.( I must not say but due to poor vocabulary dont getting other word.... )...

I feel your connection with god is diffrent and your sexual orientation is diffrent. So my same *** attraction never ever come between my religiousness and religion not comes between that as .

Yes being a religious person " sayam on indriya" control on all Organ has expected to get up from level of body... Honesty,,, committed with one...etc many teaching in to religion is there to make you better Human.... and mostly it cross with the sexual orientation.

However I am not a saint and nither try to be... My religioness stop me.to fall in dark... But that also true As like anyone I have the dark side as well...

As I understood ... You not need to fight with "Kama ( here in sense of sexual desire).. But just try to made it cultured and mannered through the religion...it helps you alot on self control.

I clearly distinguish between religion and spirituality. Every religion as an institution has its set of rules and they are necessary it's survival. Spirituality is way beyond institutional religion. Can I be a religious practicing person with deep Spirituality? Absolutely yes. Can I be deeply spiritual without being part of any institutional religion? Absolutely yes. Every institutional religion is profoundly connected to the culture where it originated and propagated. But spirituality goes beyond culture and the place.

Any religion (old or new) is made to put human on the path of righteousness, peace and ultimately self-awareness. But, human is using religion for self and others elimination. Any Religion with deep practice and dedication leads to spiritual self awareness as being spritual is essence of any religion.

I consider myself as spiritual person and respect any religion. But, I am a very simple human with all aspirations and moreover I like men and hence have to lead a dual life of being a straight and a hidden gay life.

I also strongly believe, being gay is as natural as being a straight as we are also part of this God created nature. If we are part of nature how can gay *** be un-natural. We must get the equal rights and recognition just as anyone and I pray no one should lead a dual life like me.

great topic for discussion!
i am a mature man. educated and gay.
someone once asked me about religion. i explained in simple terms....religions are like roads, each with a different name and each having its own sign posts to follow, so you dont take risks or fall into danger. all these roads lead to the same CREATOR (GOD)!
yes a creator did create us. however human beings with their limited brains have tried to interpret gods laws and rules (sign posts), to make god happy and to keep us from taking risks or falling into danger. however/whatever these so called roads/religions may say/preach/demand, NO ONE HAS SPOKEN TO GOD AND GOD HAS NOT SPOKEN TO ANYONE....YET! so....???
do we have to believe in some religion or not? temples/mosques/churches are like a home...a family where you feel secure with people who are like you and share some common goals. as humans, we need this sanctury to feel safe and loved and nutured. it is part of society. HOWEVER, WE MUST FIRST FIND GOD IN OUR OWN HEART/SOUL!
god created all your 5 fingers on your hand, each with it own purpose, some play a more important role while others less. same as in society.
so why should some people created by the same god feel ashamed of their different purpose/roles? religious leaders have taken upon themselves to make their own rules (CALLED HOLY BOOKS) and force them upon their followers by ABUSING their positions, all in the name of god! these religious leaders are professional middle agents for people who seek god. do we need agents to seek god? NO!
the alternate is SPIRITUALISM. take the good practices that you have learnt so far from your religion and tune it to have a direct connection with YOUR CREATOR. say your own personal prayers in times of good (BE THANKFUL) and in times of trouble (SEEK HELP). find the goodness (APPRECIATION) in everything around and be good (RESPECT) to everyone around you. WE ARE ALL OF THE SAME CREATOR.

I guess Religion is a curse it creates an unnecessary social difference. Allaha won’t serve Biriyani Krishana won’t serve butter. Life is difficult for both “good” and “bad” people. Further we are not created by God we were created by our mom and dad, they decided to conceive and they nurtured educated protected and gave us a life. They intact were created by their parents. And the human race itself was created somewhere in betweeen there were no humans during Jurassic period then dinosaurs got extinct so in the length of time new creatures keep popping and survive for some time and then gets *** back. We all r in deep unwavering dream of life. The science of 0 alone is permanent I.e. nothing is everything and that nothing is everywhere. We toil a lot for our lives and we all know we don’t own anything and we all will die one day but still this illusory dream is so profuse that we tend to see everything as true and in our individual experience if we look at the past we can find nothing was permanent with us including our parents partners all will depart one day and we alone will be there with us forever until we die and all the struggles we faced and lost or won seems like a joke and pleasant incident to recount. Still lots of contemplations…..
