It can happen only in rare case and you have to be damn lucky. I was travelling from Pune to Mumbai on a odd day, when crowd is thin and you have lot of empty seats.
It was 6.00 pm when I was waiting at the stand and I saw a young IT guy who also was waiting for the bus. We got the 6.30 bus and we settled comfortably a few seats away from the occupied seats.
It soon became dark by the time we hit the expressway.
Soon we started, discussing and understood each others interest and started exploring each other.

Sharing my recent experience in normal volvo bus which starts from Wakad to Mumbai

Sharing my recent experience. I was waiting for ST bus for Mumbai at Wakad bus stop around 1 at night. Thankfully I got Shivshahi bus. The bus was not crowded. I took the last 3rd seat. Late night Shivneri Buses are the best. There are hardly 5-6 passengers who mostly occupy the front seats and you can basically occupy any seat in the middle or back as there is no checking of seat numbers. There are no conductors and just the bus driver.
Although I have travelled more than 7-8 times, have had experience only once. To try my luck, I always take the seat towards the middle, leaving a few empty seats in front behind the rest of the passengers. That day, there was a 50+ short but decent looking uncle, who took the seat adjacent to mine on the aisle side. He had boarded near chembur, few kms after Dadar. Back when i was traveling late night from mumbai to pune in a sleeper bus.. i had attended office party and was super drunk and high.. very boozed up. The bus was at around 11.30pm. I booked the ticket very late.. so got a seat in the last which was a double bed seat with some stranger.
