Hi guys, I recently watched this movie '*** comedy' IAMK which is disturbing a bit. It shows men that like other men in a bad light. One of the comedians say 'chee' very often at the gay guy in the movie. How do u like this one and interested to see if anyone else if offended. Please share your thoughts..

Personally i dont get offended by this kind of portrayal.
But definitely this kind of portrayal creates a bad opinion or wrong view about homosexuals in the society. It is like making fun of dark skinned ppl, bald headed, strammerers, handicapped, transgenders and now homosexuals.
I wish one day a movie that portrays the reality about gay ppl ishould be made. |

I personally feel this is very wrong. This trend in tamil cinema started i guess in 2005-2008 with movies like vetaiyadu vellaiyadu, athu oru kana kaalam etc. This is basically because of the ignorance of the tamil film directors and the society in general. First most people are not aware of gays. Even those who have heard about it dont know the difference between gays and tansgenders and hence the whole confusion. Goa was the one and only movie which atleast attempted to show gays in good light. In this way bollywood movies are much better. There are several good hindi movies like dhostana, fasion etc. |

Which is this movie IAMK?
It is actually disgusting to see most movies using the gay characters as caricature. Most gay men are shown as feminine and to provide cheap thrills almost depicting them as eunuchs. This is worrisome in a place like TN Andhra where the audiences their movies seriously. I am sure movies which portray gay characters in a sensitive manner will create an automatic acceptance such is the power of cinema in south.
As far as reference to KJo is concerned my view is he has evolved with time movies like Dostana were caricatur’ish but they got the public attention. However he has portrayed homosexuality very sensitively in Kapoor and Sons and the directorial venture which features saqib Salim and Randeep Hooda. I really wish the movies from south are made with more sensitivity. I feel the South Indians are more influenced by movies than any other part of the world. |

IAMK - Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuttu- coming under pretext of a adult horror comedy, this movie is panned by critics for all reasons. Adult comedy cannot be used as a camouflage for sleazy vulgarity.. Something in the lines of "Delhi Belly", " American pie" etc can be called as adult comedy.. I felt the same director's debut movie "HHM" was a sleazy yawning horribly made movie with sexual innuendos as deliberate third graded additions.. IAMK - from what I read in reviews seems to be already panned by all major dailies for being homophobic .. First of all film makers must understand what's gayness. They should stop stereotyping gay men on screen as effeminate. Also the difference between a transgender and gay and bisexual .. I guess in the movie "THARAMANI" the portrayal was close to real.. In the scene when "Andrea" tells about she discovering her husband 's sexuality and the following confrontation was done so Aesthetically.. Guess more such directors with gender sensitivity should be coming to Tamil cinema.. Instead if we support sleazy stuff like IAMK we can never expect quality cinema..

I remember watching these stereotypes in my tween years and wondering " I don't behave like that, am I really gay?"
It confuses a lot of young minds and spreads misconceptions about us in the society. All this makes coming out much harder since people grow up on this crap. LGBT people only exist to be the butt of jokes.
Since most of us live dual lives, we are sometimes forced to laugh at these jokes just to fit in... that's something I always hate :(
The movie Goa was great, subtle in its characters. Hope the next crop of filmmakers make us proud :) |

@cuddlebear - I agree with your observation there are times we would have ourselves participated in rediculing someone for his sexuality or effeminate character of course I have changed over the years and I neither laugh and subtly tell others that we need to be more accepting.
@valentine - I saw Taramani almost on Fast Forward mode coz I heard about all the +ve reviews but it was a slow movie. I particularly loved the way Andrea tells about her husbands sexuality and his own struggles.
I think the society in South is a bit more hypocritical where everything happens but things are pushed under the carpet under the garb of CULTURE and most people pretend nothing really happens. |

Haven't watched IAMK yet. Taramani dealt with homosexuality so matured and very sensibly. There is a movie called 'Memories of March' starring Bengali Director Rituporno Ghosh (who was out as Gay but unfortunately not with us now). It is one of the finest gay themed Indian movies. Do try to watch it if not seen. |

Most of the movies sterotype gay as being feminine or being pottai if to be precise in tamil. The word pottai is itself such disgusting to hear. Remember the tamil comedian vadivelu saying, ‘avana nee’ and this word has struck a chord.
The genera public or so called the straights have always used the stereotypes for the minority groups. Eunuchs are called ‘ali’ and gays and eunuchs are always ah.. ah type. Even in movie ‘I’ it was projected that way.
The only way to solve these issues is to educate people about *** and sexualty in schools and colleges. The government and the system must support and cooperate people and bring them equal on the table.
Without government support and the system in place its never gonna happen.. |

This is about a Malayalam movie trailer which I saw recently . It was a movie "nyan marykutty" ( i am Mary kutty). Jayasurya was the hero. In the one scene in the trailer he says 'I am not a transgender but a transsexual' ., guess the movie would be in the lines of "Transamerica" ..I guess Malayalam films are more sensible and daring these days. Also mallu Heroes don't shy to act in such roles. I remember seeing Prithviraj as a gay police officer in some movie which I saw in dubbed Tamil..
It's good to see such movies rather typecasting gay men as effeminate and ridiculing them (transgenders, transsexuals) in the name of comedy. |

@Valentine thanks for the input. Just now saw the trailer in youtube. I agree with you that malayalam movies are much much more advanced when it comes to dealing with delicate subjects like this. But even in this film i was pretty much disappointed since they are still showing Jayasurya as a TG dressed up in women's clothes. Why cant they just make a movie only about gays and not mix TGs and gays. For me a gay is person who likes his male identity but also likes another man (orientation). A TG is a person who doesnt likes his male identity and loves another man. Prithiviraj as a gay cop did an amazing job in mumbai police (malayalam movie). Unfortunately the film was a flop. There is another gay malayalam movie by name my life partner which talks about the secret relationship between two closeted gays and how one guy's marriage strains their relationship. We need more movies like that to showcase the real plight of gays in India. |
